Pea Protein Powder Benefits

Pea protein powder has rapidly been becoming a popular source of protein supplementation in the bodybuilding and athletic communities. What are the the reasons one would choose pea protein powder over other supplementation options?

What is pea protein powder?

Pea protein powder is simply a powder that is derived from the field pea. It first has the carbohydrates removed from it, then is made into a powder that can be used in various ways in various recipes. Pea protein powder is not simply pea flour for two reasons. First, it has had the carbohydrates, such as starch and fiber removed from it, and second, it is derived from the field pea, not the sweet pea.

How does the protein in pea protein powder compare with others?

Pea protein powder is a complete protein, meaning it has all nine amino acids present in its final composition. Although it is somewhat lacking in methionine and cystine, it can be considered a complete protein. It is very high in lysine levels, which is a huge benefit. Because it is somewhat lacking in methionine and cystine, it should not be used for protein replacement, but rather supplementation.

Are there dietary restrictions with pea protein powder?

The lack of dietary restrictions is probably the greatest area where pea protein powder gains users. Unless one is allergic to peas, pea protein powder can be used by almost anyone.

Some people may be allergic to milk. This disallows the use of whey protein on many occasions. The casein that is present is whey protein is what causes their allergic reactions. Without casein being present, there will be no allergic reactions.

Legumin is present in pea protein powder, on the other hand. This protein is very similar in structure to casein, but it is different enough to not cause the allergic reactions that one may have to casein.

Many people are either vegan or vegetarian. This dietary restriction on many occasions will disallow the use of animal proteins. Whey protein falls into the category of animal protein. These individuals are then subjected to the use of vegetable protein only. The legumin that is in pea protein powder falls into this category.

Does pea protein powder restrict testosterone production?

For those individuals that are subjected to the use of vegetable protein only, their protein of choice in the past was the soybean, or soy protein powder. It has relatively recently been found that soybeans, and therefore soy protein powder, prevents or inhibits the production of testosterone.

Testosterone, as we all know, is a key ingredient to the building of lean muscle. With the consumption of soy protein, this inhibits the production of testosterone, and therefore lean muscle mass. Pea protein powder, on the other hand, does not inhibit the production of testosterone, and therefore promotes the building of lean muscle mass.

How does the taste of pea protein powder compare to other supplements?

For many years, it has been the taste of protein supplements that has been the biggest discouraging factor for their use. Whey and soy proteins especially have been known for not being very palatable. This is not the case with pea protein powder.

Pea protein powder, with the removal of many or all carbohydrates, such as starch and fiber, leaves it with essentially no taste at all. This is one of the biggest benefits to pea protein powder in terms of its culinary differences to other protein supplements.

Does pea protein powder cause one to be gaseous?

The consumption of many legumes, such as beans and peas, cause one to be gaseous. This is not the case with pea protein powder. Pea protein powder has already had the fiber removed from it during its processing. This lack of fiber prevents pea protein powder from causing intestinal gas.

What is the bottom line with pea protein powder?

As one can see, pea protein powder has benefits ranging from being an excellent source of protein to a lack of intestinal gas. Although, the choice is ultimately up to you, one can see that pea protein powder is an excellent supplement.
