Put the Pea in Protein

Pea protein powder is one of the latest and greatest things to come about in protein supplementation for bodybuilders and athletes. This will beg many questions from said bodybuilders and athletes before they jump ship to another form of supplementation.

What is pea protein powder?

Pea protein powder is made from the yellow field pea, Pisum sativum. This is unlike the peas on your dinner table with Sunday pot roast and mashed potatoes and gravy. Those are sweet peas. The natural sugar, and carbohydrate count overall, is less in the yellow field pea versus the green sweet pea.

Yellow field peas are gathered and cleaned. From this point, they are stripped of all carbohydrates, including starch and fiber. They are then allowed to dry.

After drying, the cleaned peas, void of carbohydrates, are then ground into a fine powder. This is pea protein powder. This is not pea flour. Pea flour has all its carbohydrates still intact. This pea protein powder can then be used in just about any recipe or use that other protein supplements have been utilized.

What is the protein composition of pea protein powder?

The protein that is present in pea protein powder is Legumin. This is close in composition to casein, which is the protein that is present in milk and whey protein. It is a complete protein, and is high in lysine. It is low, on the other hand, in methionine and cysteine. For this reason, it should not be used for protein replacement, but rather supplementation.

How is pea protein powder better than other protein supplements?

As already stated, the protein present in pea protein powder is similar to casein, but not quite the same. This gives pea protein powder an advantage to whey protein. The reason for this is some people have dietary restrictions against milk and milk products. This prevents them from consuming whey protein due to lactose intolerances and milk allergy. These people are forced to look at vegetable proteins for protein supplementation.

Vegetable proteins leaves one with the options of soy or pea protein powders. Vegans and vegetarians are often under this same restriction. Soy has relatively recently been found to not promote testosterone production, as with the consumption of most other proteins. This is not the case with the legumin in pea protein powder. Legumin is much like casein in structure. Both casein and legumin are known to promote the production of testosterone. Testosterone, as we all know, is necessary in the building of lean muscle.

The last big benefit of pea protein powder compared to the rest is the taste. We all are familiar with the tastes associated with whey and soy protein supplements. Some are more palatable than others. With pea protein powder there is not a taste at all. This allows supplementation within just about any recipe or application.

Pea protein powder has it. It is a wonderful complete protein for supplementation purposes. It has little to no dietary restrictions. It promotes testosterone production, all the while having the most favorable palate that a protein supplement can have, none!
