Benefits of Whey Protein Powder

Many researchers, fitness fanatics and athletes say that whey protein supplements are the most effective on the market today. However, if you are unfamiliar with protein powders, the world of whey protein may seem a little daunting, especially if you have to choose your first protein powder. Want to know more about the whey protein powder and its benefits? Read our information below to find out!

Types of Whey Protein

Before we start our overview, we need to mention that whey protein comes in three different forms: isolate, concentrate and hydrolysed whey. Each of these protein supplements have the same benefits, but the proteins are absorbed at various speeds by the human body, depending on the structure of the compound and its size.

Great Source of Protein

Whey protein supplements are a great source of complete protein, more specifically a protein that contains all nine essential amino acids. Essential amino acids such as leucine, isoleucine and tryptophan all have benefits for your health and your general fitness level.

Weight Loss & Muscle Gain

It may sound a little contradictory, but whey protein powder has the ability to make you lose weight and gain muscle at the same time. During a twelve-week study executed in Minnesota, researchers found that test subjects taking a whey protein supplement lost a lot more body fat and preserved their muscle mass more than subjects not taking advantage of a whey supplement. This study is proof that whey protein  is able to maintain your muscle mass during a diet, but that it also helps you to lose weight.

The increase in muscle mass and strength became clear during a study executed by researchers at the Baylor University in Texas. During the study, 19 men followed a resistance training program over a period of ten weeks. Some male athletes during this study were given 14 grams of whey and casein protein supplements, as well as 6 grams of amino acids. The remainder of test subjects were given a placebo.

Test subjects following the resistance program with protein supplements and amino acids showed a greater increase in fat-free mass, but also a drastic increase in strength, when compared to test subjects who did not take the supplied supplements.

The two studies we mentioned above provide clear indications and actual scientific proof that whey protein supplements can benefit both weight loss and muscle gain. If you would like to lose weight, but gain muscle, whey protein can be your new ally.

Fights Cravings & Hunger Feelings

Whey protein supplements, such as whey protein concentrate, have additional benefits for athletes looking to lose weight, more specifically the reduction of hunger feelings; this benefit is also supported by research.

A study executed in Australia followed 28 obese men. These obese men were divided in four different groups, and each of these groups needed to consume a specific drink during the research period. Results showed that the group consuming 50 grams of whey, experienced less hunger than other groups due to a decrease in ghrelin, a hormone that sends signals to your brain to create a hunger feeling. The study proved that if you are prone to overeating or binging on unhealthy foods, whey protein concentrate or another protein supplement could be extremely useful.

Possible Cancer-Preventing Properties

Medical researchers have stated that certain nutrients could give you extra protection against cancer, and more research is currently being done to figure out if these protective qualities could actually benefit the search to finding the cancer cure.

There have been studies all around the world, where scientists tried to determine a link between whey protein and cancer prevention, in particular prostate and colon cancer. Results showed that the use of whey protein concentrate, isolate or hydrolysed whey could give you more protection against certain types of cancer. However, detailed results regarding this study still need to be released.

Counters Stress

Whey protein concentrate could help you to counter stress, because a study in the Netherlands showed that whey protein concentrate was quite helpful for people susceptible to stress and stress-related conditions. During the extensive study, 58 test subjects were subjected to experimental stress. The obtained results showed that test subjects consuming whey showed less symptoms of stress and depression than subjects who did not. At the end of the study, scientists concluded that the use of whey protein could cause changes of serotonin levels in the brain. Serotonin is often used in medications to treat anxiety and depression-related illnesses, so whey protein could potentially be a more natural way to tackle such problems.

Even though whey protein has the ability to reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety, it is not a replacement for a medical treatment. If you struggle with depression or anxiety, be sure to contact a health professional to discuss the problem.

A Better Immune System

The use of whey protein could mean a better immune system as well, at least according to research executed at the University of Alberta. During the study, male test subjects showed greatly reduced levels of glutathione when involved in a regime of strenuous aerobic activities. Reduced levels of glutathione can have an impact on the nervous system, gastrointestinal system, and the immune system.

Over the course of the study, the male subjects were supplemented with whey protein; this to see the effect of the protein supplement on the glutathione levels. Results showed that test subjects taking whey protein experienced a significant lesser decrease in glutathione, subsequently providing the usefulness of a whey protein during training.

Lower Blood Pressure

Whey protein  could protect you against heart disease as well, because there is a link between the protein supplement and blood pressure reduction. Inside whey protein, there are so-called ACE-inhibitors. These inhibitors have proven positive for the management of blood pressure.

Conclusion

All whey protein supplements have a great amount of benefits for your physical fitness levels, but also for your health. If you are considering a protein supplement to improve your health, and get more out of your training, whey protein will be perfect.
