When DNA is fully transcribed into RNA, the RNA travels to the ribosome. Once the ribosome has been reached, the RNA is converted into amino acids. These amino acids are the body’s building blocks, because they form a polypeptide chain that eventually forms protein.

A first study was executed at the American University of Oklahoma, where a large number of test subjects were divided into two groups. One group had to continue their normal eating habits, while the second group was given a whey protein supplement. The supplement had a total of 400 calories and contains exactly 40 grams of protein. This second group needed to take the protein once every day over a period of two weeks, followed by twice daily for the remaining eight weeks of the study. During the study, both groups participated in resistance and endurance training over a period of ten weeks. Both training and supplementing was monitored by the researchers. 

At the end of the first study, both groups showed a decrease in fat. However, there was a difference between the results of the supplement and non-supplement group. The group who took the supplement achieved a fat loss of 9.3%, while the non-supplement group only obtained 4.6%. There were also significant differences in muscle mass gain, which was higher in supplemented test subjects. Participants taking the supplements also showed lower levels of LDL cholesterol.

Another study in 2006 also showed great promise for the use of whey protein and weight loss. The study showed that adding 60 grams of whey protein to a regular diet daily, compared to 60 grams of carbohydrate, lead to a significant decrease of body fat over a period of six months.
