The Secrets of Whey Protein Isolate

Have you always wondered what whey protein actually is? Want to know what the differences are between regular whey protein and Whey Protein Isolate? No need to wonder any further, because our article below will uncover the secrets of Whey Protein Isolate!

How Is Whey Protein Powder Made?

To understand how whey protein powder is made, we must first look at its source – milk. A dairy product such as milk consists of two proteins, more specifically casein and whey. During the cheese making process, whey can be separated from the casein in milk. Whey protein can therefore be considered as a by-product of the cheese making process.

Even though whey is separated from casein during the cheese making process, whey is still considered to be a complete protein. Whey contains all nine essential amino acids and is low in lactose. However, considering whey protein still contains lactose, it is not suitable for people with severe lactose intolerance. Fortunately, these athletes can still count on vegetable-based protein supplements.

Whey protein is not the only basis for powdered supplements, because casein is used as well. In general, whey protein is faster to absorb, while casein absorbs more slowly but spreads its benefits over a longer period of time.

What Is the Difference Between Whey Protein Concentrate and Whey Protein Isolate?

Whey protein isolate and concentrate can fulfil the same function, but there is a difference between the two. Whey protein isolate contains a higher percentage of protein than whey protein concentrate. Whey isolate is also lower in lactose, carbohydrates and fat. There is also a difference in price, because Whey Protein Isolate tends to cost more due to the many manufacturing processes it needs to undergo.

What Are the General Benefits of Whey Isolate?

Whey isolate is considered to be one of the most complete forms of protein, considering it contains all the nine essential amino acids that can provide athletes with benefits. To understand the exact benefits Whey isolate can deliver, let us take a closer look at the most important amino acids in this protein powder.

Leucine

One of the most essential amino acids for muscle growth is leucine. Leucine is the amino acid that moderates insulin in the body during and after your training, which also enables it to regulate blood sugar levels. Leucine also has an impact on neurotransmitters in the brain. Because of this particular function, scientists believe that leucine could also help prevent and treat psychological problems such as depression.

Isoleucine

As the name already suggests, isoleucine is quite similar to leucine. However, even though these two essential amino acids are quite similar, isoleucine fulfil different roles in the human body. Isoleucine is the isolated form of leucine and helps the body the produce energy and haemoglobin. Isoleucine is also extremely important for children, since it aids nitrogen growth within the muscle cells, especially during childhood.

Lysine

Amino acid lysine stands in close relationship with carnitine, considering lysine is responsible for the growth and the production of this nutrient. Carnitine is the nutrient responsible for the conversion of fatty acids into lower cholesterol. Lysine also aids our body in the absorption of calcium. Calcium is vital for bone strength and collagen production, hence why this mineral is extremely important throughout childhood as well as adult life.

A lack of lysine can lead to some serious symptoms, so keeping the levels of this amino acid on a healthy level is advised for everyone. A lack of lysine is known to cause symptoms such as nausea, depression, chronic fatigue, muscle weakness and even osteoporosis. Needless to say, a lack of lysine can have a negative impact on your workout.

Methionine

Even though methionine is not as known as leucine, isoleucine or lysine, it is still quite important for the functioning of several functions in the human body. The primary function of methionine is aiding in the formation of cartilage through sulphur. More even, no other amino acid can contain sulphur except for methionine.

People who are short on methionine can experience some heavy side-effects, this includes arthritis, tissue damage and poor healing capabilities. When you have to recover from an intensive workout, methionine is therefore always a recommended amino acid.

Phenylalanine

Phenylalanine is considered to be quite the complicated amino acid, considering it can occur in three forms: L-phenalynaline, D-phenalynaline and DL-phenalynaline. The first type, L-phenalynaline is the natural form of the amino acid, which can be found in protein. Then there is also D-phenalynaline, which is the form that is produced in a laboratory. DL-phenalynaline is a combination of both.

The amino acid phenylalanine transforms into another substance when it is consumed, more specifically tyrosine. Tyrosine is also considered to be an amino acid and is responsible for the creation of protein, various brain chemicals and specific thyroid hormones.

A lack of phenylalanine can have a psychological as well as a physical effect. A shortage of phenylalanine can lead to symptoms such as poor memory and concentration, a lack of energy, depression and poor appetite.

Threonine

Threonine is without a doubt an amino acid with a countless amount of functions. Amongst its primary roles, threonine plays an important role in the immune system, heart functioning, liver functioning and the health of the central nervous system. However, threonine is also an amino acid that ensures proteins are balanced in the body, therefore directly contributing to muscle growth, muscle repair and energy supply.

Other Essential Amino Acids

In addition to the essential amino acids already mentioned, there are three more essential amino acids that have an important role in our body. Tryptophan, the amino acid responsible for a healthy nervous system and brain health; Valine, the amino acid needed for optimal muscle growth and repair; and finally – histidine, the amino acid that aids in the transport of chemical messengers to the brain.

In conclusion, the combination of all essential amino acids can provide more benefits than only muscle growth and muscle repair. At the end of the day, these substances can contribute to better health and improved wellbeing in general.

Whey Protein Isolate is one of the best supplements rich in essential amino acids, so if you do not know where to start, a Whey Protein Concentrate supplement could be an excellent starting point. However, before you commence with the use of protein supplements, it is always a good idea to speak to a licensed trainer or a medical professional about adding a protein supplement to your diet. If your diet already contains loads of protein, you may need another supplement than Whey Protein Concentrate. However, if your diet does not match your rigorous training where protein intake is concerned, Whey Protein Isolate may be a good option.

To ensure you are using the right supplements for your current exercise routine, or to supplement your diet, you could filter the available supplements at Nutrients Direct by goal or sport. For example, if your goal is increasing your performance in the gym, you can choose performance in the filter to immediately get an overview of all supplements that could increase your performance. We do need to mention that it is best to ask for some professional advice if you are just starting out with supplements, since there are some things to consider. Therefore, if you are unsure about the use of certain supplements, speak to licensed professional before you start supplementing.
